The importance of the immune system

I see my mom adding several goodies in her food.

One time she adds goji berries on her plate, the next time she adds them into mine. Every now and then she finds something new to add.

She does her research online to see if the food is suitable for cat or/and dogs and then tries to introduce the new eating habits to the rest of the family.

In recent years there has been a lot of talk about the importance of the immune system and how a strong immune system helps people live longer and better.

But what does it practically mean to have a strong immune system according to what my mom has researched ? The immune system is a special defense mechanism.

It can identify the foreign cells in order to neutralise or destroy them! The immune system is responsible for protecting the body against

  • viruses
  • seasonal diseases such as influenza
  • other health problems such as arthritis, allergies, abnormal cell growth and cancer
In the human body

various processes and reactions take place in the human body every day, which result in the production of free radicals. Free radicals play an important role in the functioning of the human body and at the same time can have a toxic effect on it.

Studies by a large number of different scientific groups

Studies have been linked to the use of antioxidants in the human diet and its beneficial properties.

Currently antioxidants are widely used as dietary supplements or are given along with weight loss diet plans. Although the body balances the possible overproduction of free radicals through the endogenous antioxidant system, dietary antioxidants contribute significantly to protecting the cell from oxidative stress, protecting its integrity and enhancing its immune function.

As the years go by…

The need for a strong immune system and a rich in antioxidants diet is becoming clearer day by day.

What may sometimes be overlooked is that we pets also need a strong immune system so that our body can respond more easily and faster to any challenge. It is often observed in veterinary clinics that when there is a health issue the vet usually advises strengthening the immune system in order to deal with it. But how much better would it be if you had planned ahead?

Proper and good quality food

Good sleeping schedule, exercise and frequent preventive check-ups at the vet are our allies for a better and healthier life.

The value of a strong immune system is not limited to my shiny hair though. At crucial times such as when dealing with an infection for example, from the smallest to the biggest or even operations, from a simple tooth cleaning to something more complicated the immune system plays a very important role.

Immune system and age…

This is the same as in humans. Both a very young or a senior animal belong to the so-called vulnerable groups. Although it is important to be careful and take care of a strong immune system throughout our lifetimes, at these challenging times it’s even more important.
